READER DISCUSSION GUIDE

A NOTE TO READING GROUPS

When I wrote She Wasn’t Supposed to Fly, I was telling my story. What I didn’t anticipate was how often readers would find pieces of their own stories within it.

Since the book was published, some of my favorite conversations have begun with readers telling me what stayed with them. Sometimes it was a moment they recognized. Sometimes it was a question they’d asked themselves. And sometimes something they read brought back an experience of their own.

Those conversations inspired the Book Club Discussion Guide. I’ve included questions that explore the book’s themes, but also invite you to reflect on your own experiences. There are no right answers, and you don’t need to discuss every question. Choose the ones that spark something in your group and follow the conversation wherever it leads.

My story may have brought you together, but I hope the conversation gives each of you space to reflect on your own.

AN INVITATION TO CONNECT

One of the unexpected pleasures of publishing She Wasn’t Supposed to Fly has been the conversations it has sparked with readers.

If your book club selects my memoir, I’d be happy to join your group for a complimentary virtual conversation via Zoom. We can talk about the stories and themes that resonated with your group, explore questions that came up during your discussion, or simply follow the conversation wherever it leads.

If you’d like to arrange a conversation, please use the form below to tell me a little about your book club and when you’re hoping to meet.
